Adel Tawil "Lieder" - Interesting Realizations

I found this piece in my search for the most popular songs to hit the German pop chart. Adel Tawil's, "Lieder", is both sentimental and catchy, and I really enjoyed listening to it. Adel Tawil is a German singer, song writer and producer. Aside from his solo career, he is also a part of the German pop duo, Ich + Ich. He recently released his first solo album in November 2013. 

I find Adel Tawil to be particularly interesting because he is Afro-German. His father is Egyptian, and his mother is Tunisian. Adel is a part of the 2% German population of African descent living in Germany. The percentage is difficult to estimate because Germany's census doesn't include race. Major cities including Berlin and Hamburg, however, have notable Black communities with a relatively increasing amount of multiracial families. The population of Afro-Germans in specific areas of Germany correlates to the active centers of occupation in these cities. 

As a person of African descent, Adele Tawil's background resonates with me because he had the ability to ascend in musical popularity and success despite his racial background (being a minority). His place on the charts currently demonstrates how progressive Germany is in its pop culture, and the fact that music is a powerful tool that can break cultural barriers within a society.
