German Lieder

German Lied

As a classical singer, I hold the joy of singing and studying German 9music. German Lieder is truly some of my favorite music to sing, and it reflects the musical time period which was marked by romanticism, as well as the national style of the people of that area. German Lied is basically a German art song with piano accompaniment  This genre originated from amateur music composed for performance in the home, but transitioned to a highly sophisticated art form. One of the most recognized composers of this style of music was  Franz Schubert (1798-1828).
Schubert was able to elevate Lieder to new dimensions through his close readings of poetry in the ways he set the music. This close reading of poetry was outlines in his music through his use of harmony, pitch register, the role of piano accompaniment, and musical form.
His pieces are highly expressive and has the ability to convey both the narrative and emotions of the character in a single piece of music.

Some of my favorite pieces include Gretchen Am Spinrade, An die Musik, Elkönig, and Nacht und Träume
