Bauhaus was the first school attempting to combine art with modern technology, which was founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius in Weimar. The literal meaning of the word "Bauhaus" is "House of Construction," stating that Bauhaus is a school for building. However, Bauhaus did not have its architecture department when it first opened. Bauhaus, as an art school, has a profound influence on modern design, ranging from architecture, interior design, graphic design, to typography. It is very often referred to as one of the most influential current of Modernist Architecture.

The leaders of Bauhaus were famous architects at the time: Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Among them, Mies van der Rohe is especially well known to the US for many of his glass and steel buildings (Farnsworth House, Seagram Building, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, etc.) and his motto "less is more."
